Local Info
Nestled in the heart of the Catawba River Valley, Catawba County is a unique place to live. From an elevation of approximately 1,000 feet, within an hour one can enjoy the beauty of the Blue Ridge mountains, including hiking, skiing, and Mt. Mitchell State Park, the highest point east of the Mississippi River. In four to six hours you can be at the beaches of North or South Carolina. The Catawba River provides frontage on three lakes! Recreational opportunities include River Bend Park and Bakers Mountain.
The area is served by the Hickory Regional Airport and Charlotte Douglas International Airport is only a 45 minute drive. Our heritage is kept alive by the Catawba County Historical Society which maintains a museum in the 1924 courthouse, operates Murrays Mill grist mill and has one of the last surviving covered bridges in the state. From the Hickory Community Theatre and the Green Room Community Theatre, to the Hickory Museum of Art, The Arts and Science Center, Hickory Community Concert Association, and the Western Piedmont Symphony, cultural life is diverse.
Furniture manufacturing began in the region and there are hundreds of manufacturers representing thousands of brands at the Hickory Furniture Mart and the Catawba Furniture Mall.
Education is completed from the three local school systems, through Catawba Valley Community College and Lenoir Rhyne College.
